'Man Utd need major surgery!' | Erik ten Hag could make some major moves in the January transfer window

's habit of signing emergency strikers in the winter has reportedly led them to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The forward is reportedly prepared to discuss the move, which would see him follow in the footsteps of Odion Ighalo and Wout Weghorst, who also landed at Old Trafford on short-term deals.

Ighalo bagged five goals in 23 games on loan at United, in a spell which saw football interrupted by the Covid pandemic. Weghorst, meanwhile, spent the second half of last season working under Erik ten Hag after signing on a temporary basis from Burnley.

The 6ft 6in frontman hardly proved to be the answer to the Red Devils' goal-scoring prayers, notching only twice in 31 appearances, and failing to score in 17 Premier League games. Ten Hag will hope that the club's next attacking endeavour is more successful.

According to Sport Bild, the pursuit of Choupo-Moting is heading in the right direction, with Bayern and the player both 'ready to talk' about a January loan deal.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and the presence of fellow strikers Harry Kane and Mathys Tel should allow Bayern to sanction his move to Old Trafford if they proceed with a formal offer.

Choupo-Moting's unusual path took him from Schalke to Stoke City, with big moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern coming later on in his career. The German-born Cameroon international scored 17 goals in all competitions last season.

But he isn't the only name on Ten Hag's attacking wish list. Rival Bundesliga striker Timo Werner is also believed to be a player of interest, and the RB Leipzig star would reportedly be open to a Premier League return, despite his disappointing spell at Chelsea.

Like Choupo-Moting, Werner's prospective move to Old Trafford would likely be on loan as United scramble to stay on the right side of Financial Fair Play regulations. Ten Hag desperately needs to add goals to his squad after a wayward start to the campaign.

Big-money signing Rasmus Hojlund has managed just one Premier League goal this term, while Marcus Rashford's drop-off in form has been striking. The likes of Antony and Anthony Martial are also failing to come up with the goods, while Jadon Sancho is set to be shipped out in January.

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly interested in taking the out-of-favour winger on loan, with no resolution to his well-publicised spat with Ten Hag on the horizon.
