Sporting Lisbon are trying to sign Cristiano Ronaldo in a bid to prise their former player away from his Manchester United hell, according to reports. The striker has endured a tumultuous few months. News of his desire to exit Old Trafford emerged in July, before Ronaldo then returned late to the club’s preparations for the 2022-23 season.
That meant that Ronaldo was not fully fit for United’s first game of the Premier League season, at home to Brighton. He was used as a substitute in the 2-1 defeat, and then started Saturday’s 4-0 demolition by Brentford.
Wide-ranging reports earlier this week suggested that Ten Hag could soften his stance on not allowing Ronaldo to leave. United could finally have a destination for the Portugal captain in the shape of Sporting Lisbon.
The Portuguese club, where Ronaldo started his career, are doing all they can to sign the player, according to the Independent. They claim that Sporting could launch a speculative ‘operation’ to take Ronaldo away from United.
It would be a difficult move for them to complete, though. Ronaldo’s salary at United is huge and he would need to take a big cut. From Ronaldo’s perspective, he wants to play in the Champions League but at a level where he has the chance of winning the European title again.
Sporting would also need to agree a fee with the Premier League side, who have insisted that Ronaldo will not be released from his contract a year early. He signed a two-year contract when he completed a move back to Old Trafford last summer - with United also having an option to extend the deal by 12 months.
There is increasing debate at United over whether it would be better to sell Ronaldo given that his current unhappiness could have an impact on the rest of the squad. After two dismal defeats, Ten Hag is keen for morale to not fall any lower.

Ronaldo has promised to conduct a tell-all interview about his chaotic summer after hitting out at ‘lies’ in the media. The former Real Madrid and Juventus man revealed that he keeps a note of stories regarding his future.
Responding to a fan on Instagram, he wrote: “They know the truth when they interview in a couple of weeks. The media is telling lies.
“I have a notebook and in the last few months of the 100 news [stories written], only five were right. Imagine how it is. Stick with that tip.”
United were initially desperate to keep Ronaldo this season.
