Missing in the conversation of Abravanel Hall’s potential demise while creating an “entertainment district” for downtown Salt Lake City is open space: The southwest corner of West Temple and South Temple is the only corner in the city central business district to be open. Open in the grand sense as pedestrian friendly, of relative size and incorporating greenery within the element.

I do not agree with any aspect of this planned creation-via-demolition-and-reconstruction for Salt Lake City.

Should the desire to improve our city by introducing facilities designed to encourage users to come, enjoy, stay and spend in the downtown area advance, know there are an endless supply of ideas to accomplish implementation of that goal. Carte blanche dismissal of an existing facility isn’t one of them.

Yes, the usefulness and significance of this hall may be argued until the cows come home, but losing it and its accompanying, extremely beneficial, public feature is not acceptable.

Jeff Creveling, Salt Lake City
