When it comes to high school lacrosse in Utah, Sophie Curtis might well be a name worth remembering throughout the season.
Curtis, a 5-foot-5 senior midfielder, demonstrated her scoring prowess in Bingham’s very first game of the season. In a 9-7 win at Pleasant Grove, she found the net four times for the Miners.
That’s a little bit above her norm, but not too much.
Last season, Curtis averaged 2.5 goals a game as Bingham advanced to the state semifinals.
“I feel like, myself, I’m a very strong — driving into the goal,” said Curtis. “Working together as a team creates those opportunities.”
Curtis was also a basketball player for the Miners in her sophomore and junior years, but not this season.
“I just wanted to concentrate on lacrosse, my strong-suit sport, and focus on that,” said Curtis, who hopes to walk on to the Utah Valley lacrosse team when she enrolls at the Orem school in the fall.
Curtis said she has seen the sport’s popularity grow since being sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association.
“It just makes it feel like we’re more involved in the sporting community,” she said of lacrosse’s inclusion in the roll call of UHSAA official sports. “I think we have more supporters than we did before we were sanctioned. It’s definitely picking up from what it used to be.”
