Thailand's election campaign heats up amid Songkran festival

Thailand is in the midst of Songkran, the Thai New Year holiday, but politicians are busy campaigning ahead of the general elections on May 14, which will determine the kingdom's government for the next four years.

The May 14 vote will be Thailand's second since the military ousted a civilian government in 2014. It is shaping up to be a contest between pro-military parties and opposition groups calling for reform and democracy.

Leading in opinion polls is the opposition Pheu Thai party. But despite its popular strength, Pheu Thai faces a difficult path to a single-party majority in the lower house, and may have to form an alliance with other parties, such as the ruling Palang Pracharath party.

Parties have registered their candidates for the 500 seats up for grabs and announced their prime minister hopefuls.

Stick with us for extensive coverage of the election including an interview with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose daughter has been chosen by Pheu Thai as one of its candidates for prime minister.
