Man survives being choked by 105 kg barbell in horror accident at Taiwanese gym

A man was rescued by fellow gym members, and survived without serious injury, after being trapped with a barbell on his neck at a gym in Taoyuan City earlier this month.

According to Apple Daily, a video of the incident went viral on Japanese social media sites in the last few days, and some writers mistakenly reported that the man had died.

Holger Chen, owner of G.K. Fitness Centers confirmed that the incident occurred in the Zhongli branch of his gyms in Taoyuan City on September 11, and that the man was in a stable condition after being sent to hospital. Holger made the statements in a live Internet broadcast on September 13, after the video of the accident began to circulate on Facebook.

The horrific video shows the man fighting for his life as the 105 kilogram barbell presses on his neck, while other members chat nonchalantly in the background, completely unaware of the man’s plight.

Eventually, the man’s legs start twitching violently, drawing the attention other gym members who quickly come to his assistance.

After around 45 seconds of being throttled by the barbell, other people come to the man’s assistance.

Holger Chen said that the man was sent to the hospital immediately and is now fine. Chen said that there was no problem with management of the gym. “It is the same as anything you practice. You must pay attention to correct posture and safe use of equipment.” Chen then demonstrated correct use of the guard bar while bench pressing, which the man involved in the accident had not used.
