Rainy season front brings heavy rain to Taiwan: East coast road and rail links cut by landslides

A rainy season front is expected to bring heavy rain to Taiwan for the next week, and has already triggered landslides in areas destabilized by an earthquake earlier this month.

Road and rail services between Yilan County and Hualien City are cut off after a series of landslides in Xiulin Township, Hualien County this afternoon. According to Taiwan Railway Corporation, a landslide has covered both northbound and southbound tracks between Chongde Station and Heren Station. An EMU 3000 express train is currently stopped inside a tunnel and will remain there until the area is confirmed safe. No casualties have been reported.

In addition, a landslide also occurred at the 160.7 kilometer mark on the Suhua Highway (Highway 9) and road traffic is blocked in both directions.

According to the Central Weather Administration, Taiwan will be affected by two waves of rainy fronts starting today, Monday, and it is likely to rain on and off for the next 6 days with brief but intense bursts of rainfall.
