Govt to set legal framework for ride-hailing platforms

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung says the government aims to establish a regulatory framework for online ride-hailing platforms within the next three years. In an interview with the Ming Pao newspaper, Lam said that next month the authorities will outline the legal responsibilities that such platforms must meet to obtain a licence. Lam expressed confidence that the government will resolve complaints about such services from the taxi sector within its current term. The transport minister also said the government will reduce tolls at the Tai Lam Tunnel after it takes control of it in May next year. Currently, the fee for private cars is HK$58. Lam said it's hoped that lower tolls at the tunnel will divert traffic from the congested Tuen Mun Road and Tolo Highway. Meanwhile, Lam said the government will consider building a fourth cross-harbour tunnel when planning the construction of the Kau Yi Chau Artificial Islands. The islands, off Lantau, are expected to be completed by 2034.
