'Kowloon City vendors want to return after revamp'

The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) on Sunday said more than half of shop operators it spoke to in Kowloon City want to move back to the neighbourhood after a makeover designed to beautify the area and preserve its culture. The ongoing project, covering three sections of Carpenter Road and Nga Tsin Wai Road, will see Kowloon City wet market relocated and some of its surrounding areas demolished to make way for more than 4,000 new flats. The authority's managing director, Wai Chi-sing, wrote on his blog that the URA held 15 meetings with wet market food vendors and Thai restaurant operators to brief them on relocation and transitional arrangements. "They shared with the team that they have been doing business in the "Dragon City" district for many years and are attached to the district, hoping to pass on the friendship," he wrote. "Some operators also hope to pass on the regional characteristics to the next generation through the relocation arrangement." Wai said the authority will reserve some shops for these vendors after the area is rebuilt and offer concessionary rent for them. The URA earlier said it hopes the new Kowloon City Market can be completed by 2030 while most of the other proposed facilities can be ready by 2037.
