Mixed reactions on redeveloping Flower Market

The redevelopment plan of several sites around the renowned Flower Market has triggered a mixed response. Sunny Lai, who has run a flower shop in the area for decades, said he wanted to continue operating his business in the same location. He also voiced concerns that the redevelopment project would diminish the appeal of the Flower Market. "After they build skyscrapers here, will the Flower Market maintain its character? That's unknown. I don’t know the plan exactly, because they didn't have much promotion or education about the plan. They didn’t distribute leaflets to us, so I don’t know," he explained. A resident living near the Flower Market said she supports the project. "Why is redevelopment bad? After redevelopment, it will be tidier, cleaner and less messy. Of course it's a good thing. Redevelopment will make this place more attractive. Concentrating things together can make things less untidy," she added. Yau Tsim Mong district councillor, Keith Lee, called on authorities to ensure fair compensation for residents and businesses affected. "We must ensure there is adequate compensation. All affected residents and businesses should receive fair and sufficient compensation. And also, there should be transparent communication," he said. Vincent Cheng, a non-executive director of the Urban Renewal Council and a DAB lawmaker, welcomed the redevelopment project, adding that it can address dilapidated housing issues and enhance the community.
