GB News bulletin on incident in New Orleans

GB News opened their regular bulletin with a tragic breaking story from America. Presenter Sophia Wenzler announced: "Some breaking news coming to us from the US.

"Fatalities have been reported and multiple are feared dead as an SUV has ploughed into crowds, celebrating New Year in New Orleans. A vehicle, reportedly crashed into a large crowd gathered on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter - a popular tourist destination in the Louisiana city."

She added they would give more details as they received them.

Emergency officials have confirmed that at least 10 people were killed in the incident, which happened at around 3.15am, while at least another 30 were injured. Witnesses claimed that a vehicle crashed into a crowd at high speed, and then the driver got out and started firing a weapon, with police returning fire.

New Orleans government agency NOLA Ready said in a post on social media that there had been "a mass casualty incident on Canal and Bourbon Street", warning people nearby to "get yourself away from the area."

Emergency services, including ambulances and vehicles from the coroner's office, were reportedly at the scene. Bourbon Street appeared to be shut down with a heavy police presence.

In a post on X, a journalist at local news outlet WGNO-TV wrote: "NOPD source states that as many as 10 fatalities after driver in pickup truck plowed into crowd on Bourbon Street.

"Multiple more injuries. Mayor and police chief on scene," he added, though this has not yet been confirmed.

WGNO reports the Bourbon Street has been cleared and closed as emergency services attend its intersection with Iberville.

Police are expected to address the incident in a press conference shortly.

Closer to home there was another New Year's Eve tragedy on London's Oxford Street.

A man is fighting for his life after police responded to reports of a "machete fight".

Emergency services rushed to Oxford Street in the early hours of New Year's Day, with eyewitnesses claiming there was screaming and people were running away from the area

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “We were called to Oxford Street at 3:05am to reports of a fight involving machetes.

"One man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. A crime scene remains in place, and our enquiries are ongoing."
