Sophie Ellis-Bextor performs in New York on NYE

BBC viewers were not impressed with the broadcast's offerings for the New Year's Eve celebrations.

They had Sophie Ellis Bextor's New Year's Eve Disco from 11.30pm to 12.45am and Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny from 11.30pm to 1.40am.

As Sophie gave a show-stopping performance of her greatest hits and Jools welcomed guests such as Roger Taylor and Bob Geldof, BBC viewers were not left very happy.

They took to social media to declare they were heading to bed early thanks to the TV offerings, as one said: "Thanks for the Fireworks, London. But it's bed time for me. Sophie Ellis-Baxtor is a snooze fest."

Another agreed: "Maybe I’m getting old but I can see why folk who stay in on NYE go to bed if the TV offerings are Sophie Ellis-Bextor or Jools Holland.."

A third chimed in: "Being forced to choose between Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Jools is a crime in itself."

A fourth agreed: "Switching between Sophie and Jools, both lacking energy and vibe."

But one fan said: "I’ve never really known much about Sophie Ellis Bextor’s music, but this NYE concert is epic!" as another said: "I don't care if people are moaning about Sophie Ellis-Bextor being on. She is such a babe."

Sophie also welcomed some impressive guests, including Jessie Ware, Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears and The Last Dinner Party.

It was announced earlier this year that she would be hosting the huge celebration following a successful 2024 for her, as her Murder on the Dancefloor hit had a resurrection on film Saltburn.

This led to her achieving sold-out tours in Europe, the United States, and Australia, as well as a duet with Peggy Gou at the yearly Glastonbury festival.

Meanwhile, BBC viewers were also stunned during the firework display itself, as they spotted the strong political message displayed in the stunning firework display for New Year's Eve.

The huge event took place above the London Eye, and gave a breakdown of everything that happened in 2024, with plenty of references to both current events and viral trends.

But it was one choice of song which particularly sparked attention, as D:Ream's Things Can Only Get Better was used during the display.
