BBC viewers were stunned as they spotted the strong political message displayed in the stunning firework display for New Year's Eve.

The huge event took place above the London Eye, and gave a breakdown of everything that happened in 2024, with plenty of references to both current events and viral trends.

But it was one choice of song which particularly sparked attention, as D:Ream's Things Can Only Get Better was used during the display.

As this is known as the Labour party's anthem, fans rushed to social media to share their shock at the song being used.

One fan said: "Things can only get better on the London fireworks as soon as labour is back in power is devious."

Another joked: "Playing Things Can Only Get Better during the fireworks was definitely a personal request from Sadiq."

A third chimed in: :Ohhhh fireworks in London are political hints.„Why does it always rain on me“ and „Things can only get better“."

A fourth quipped: "Things can only get better as the song… this country’s so f***ing unserious."

A fifth raged: "Those #LondonFireworks were a complete mess weren't they? Like a 5 year old had been let loose with the buttons, and 192 people at once in charge of the music!" and a sixth agreed: ""London Fireworks were an absolute disgrace. F**k you @MayorOfLondon using Paddington Bear & NYE to spew propaganda.

"London is no longer a 'city of hope', you killed that, and it is not 'for everyone', you filthy cockroach. A total outrage."

But one person said: "Spectacular fireworks. I'm so proud to be a Londoner, it's the best city in the world," and another agreed: "London never disappoints with their New Year fireworks display, every year it’s iconic, this year was no exception. Happy New Year!!`"

The huge firework display kicked 2025 off with a bang, with the Olympics, Paddington Bear and a tribute to the late Liam Payne being beamed in the iconic wheel of the Eye.

It has been estimated around 100,000 visitors visited the Embankment for the event, despite the severe weather conditions that left a number of New Year's Eve celebrations cancelled around the country, with events in Edinburgh, Blackpool and Newcastle being affected.

Organisers were forced to cancel events that attract visitors from across the world each year, including the famous Hogmanay, after facing warnings of high winds and heavy rain.
