The Rig Season 2 official trailer on Prime Video

Emily Hampshire of The Rig fame has teased a potentially harrowing finish gor her character Rose Mason and Fulmer Hamilton (played by Martin Compston).

Launching in 2023, Prime Video's Scottish thriller tracks the Kinloch Bravo oil rig crew as they find themselves enveloped by a mysterious fog, leading to unsettling changes in behaviour.

The show's second outing plunges certain characters into the depths of the Stac, a clandestine research base investigating the primordial entity that previously wreaked havoc.

The inaugural season's climax left Rose and Fulmers union hanging by a thread, with forthcoming episodes set to test their bond even further.

Hampshire opened up about the story's arc during a candid conversation with Screen Time, admitting: "I can't get over where it goes.

"In season one, I feel like, at least from Rose's perspective, she was all about the company and toeing the company line and climbing the ladder.

"Her relationship with Fulmer was a 'when it works for her' kind of thing, I think, and she wasn't as invested as she is now.

"It's also to do with, now she's part of the crew and she's trying to be a leader."

With more calamities, friction with the returning nemesis David Coake (Mark Addy), and groundbreaking scientific revelations, Rose and Fulmer's dynamics are set for a strenuous test.

While keeping details under wraps, Hampshire dropped hints that the pair might face dire straits as the series culminates.

"But the ending with Fulmer and Rose is so heart-swelling and heartbreaking all at the same time and we felt it on the day," she hinted. "We had this ending that I can't tell you anything about, but it felt so magical on the day, especially because of the setting that we're in. We're in the deep sea.

"And then to see it on screen and it be even better than what we thought... that feels like the whole series. We just watched the first episode on the big screen, so we're all kind of like, 'It's amazing!' And you don't always get that. You don't always love it."

Her co-star Iain Glen, who portrays team leader Magnus MacMillan, added: "If love is a little bit about self-sacrifice for the other person, it could not be a more poetic, romantic ending for the series.

"And it's really brave writing and they're, honestly, the two of them are heartbreaking. And it's incredibly touching.

"But they're both the same height. And the same colour hair," he quipped, leading Hampshire to jest, "So everything's perfect!"

The Game of Thrones alum may be suggesting a bittersweet conclusion for the duo, yet assures fans that if season two concludes on a poignant note, the finale will be nothing short of stunning.

"But wait until you see it," Glen enthused. "It's the most extraordinary... and it is that point where the most extraordinary visuals happen, but when you understand why they are where they are and what goes on between them it's a perfect kind of harmony.

"I can say it because I'm not in [the scene], but it's really, really stunning what they do."

The Rig season 2 premieres Thursday, January 2 on Prime Video.
