Squid Game (Season 2): Official trailer
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Squid Game season 2.
Squid Game season two’s cliffhanger ending hasn’t had the best reaction from its loyal Netflix fanbase.
It’s been more than two years since the South Korean horror drama first made its global debut, breaking records and quickly becoming Netflix’s biggest show.
So it came as no surprise when the streamer renewed the drama for a second outing, although the wait for the new episodes has been unexpectedly long.
Nevertheless, subscribers were thrilled when it was announced Squid Game season two would be released on Boxing Day, Thursday, December 26, so fans could binge-watch over the festive period.
The new series, which is shorter than the first by two episodes, unfortunately didn’t leave everyone feeling satisfied by the seventh and final instalment.
In the last few moments following a brutal fight in the dorm between contestants and the guards, the Front Man appears in front of Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-Jae) and his childhood friend Jung-bae (Leo Seo-hwan).
Front Man sinisterly tells Gi-hun: “Look closely at the consequences of your little hero game”, before shooting Jung-bae.
Gi-hun is then thrown to the floor by guards as Front Man walks off, leaving his rival screaming out Jung-bae’s name when the screen fades to black, bringing the episode to a close.
Stunned by the cliffhanger, many subscribers took to social media to express their surprise and disappointment.
“I waited years for this man, and it ends like that, the season actually felt good but it was too short”, one person stated. “Like come on, 3 years for only seven episodes and this ending bro.”
Another commented: “Don’t waste your time by watching #SquidGame2 worst episodes. The ending is the worst. Netflix tried to drag too much and tried to expend to another season. What are they even thinking?”
A third angrily said: “Honestly f*** Squid Game s2 for purposefully ending on a cliffhanger.”
A fellow subscriber wrote: “Just finished the second season of Squid Games…
“I am left with so many questions and no answers. The ending was upsetting. If there’s one thing I hate in cinema, it’s cliffhangers.”
“Started off so strong but such a weak last episode. What was that ending! Do we have to wait another three years?”, a subscriber agreed as someone else stated: “To leave us with a cliffhanger, Squid Game I hate you.”
Netflix has already given the green light for a third and final outing of Squid Game but as of yet, no release date has been announced, only sharing that it will return sometime in 2025.
Squid Game is available to watch on Netflix.
