The One Show: Alison Steadman on Gavin and Stacey filming wrap

Rob Brydon, the beloved Uncle Bryn from Gavin & Stacey, has opened up about his experiences on the show as it heads towards its grand finale. The actor also confessed he almost rejected the iconic role, saying: "Could you imagine."

Chatting on Dish from Waitrose with the hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett OBE, Brydon, 59, admitted that having previously portrayed a character akin to Bryn in Marion and Geoff made him apprehensive. He revealed: "At that stage in my life, about 2006, 2007, I was still thinking, 'Oh, well, you know, I've got to be...' I hadn't started doing Would I Lie to You? ".

"So, I was thinking, 'Oh, but I want to be this actor who could play any part, and if I do this part...' then one day, I simply decided no, I'm just going to do what I enjoy."

Elaborating on his career decisions, Brydon shared that he embraced the role of presenter on Would I Lie to You?

And highlighted that, having settled down with a family, he sought work that didn't involve extensive time away. He noted that while being on set may seem exciting, "the reality is anything but", reports the Manchester Evening News.

Brydon concluded: "You are miles from home. You're getting up at the crack of dawn. You don't see your family. So, I wanted things that would keep me closer to home. And I knew that the script was... You know, just superb. So off we went and thank god I did. If I hadn't, could you imagine?"

Rob amusingly revealed that he is often mistaken for Death in Paradise star Ben Miller, and hinted that if he had turned down the role, Ben would have been a probable replacement to portray Bryn. He quipped: "It'd be Ben Miller, wouldn't it? It'd be Ben - I always get mistaken for, mistaken for Ben."

He further conveyed to the BBC the importance of the role to him, asserting: "Of the roles I've played it is the most recognisable role."

"It's probably the most loved project of anything I've ever done, and it just seems to grow in the time from finishing the series to making that first special, it just grew. So it means a huge amount to me."

Gavin & Stacey will be broadcast on BBC One on Christmas Day
