Inglourious Basterds (2009 film)

Quentin Tarantino’s World War II movie focuses on a plot to assassinate the Nazi leadership at a Paris cinema. Brad Pitt’s Lieutenant Aldo Raine leads a team of Jewish American soldiers, teaming up with a French Jewish movie theatre proprietor seeking to avenge her father.

The tongue-in-cheek film, with its alternate history plot, was nominated for eight Oscars with Christoph Waltz winning Best Supporting Actor for his iconic turn as the villainous SS Colonel Hans Landa.

Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial (2024 documentary)

Over six episodes, the documentary traces Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and the major milestones of WWII. This gripping docuseries examines Adolf Hitler and the Nazis' rise, rule and reckoning from pre-WWII to the Holocaust to the Nuremberg trials.

The goal is to tell the story of WWII in a new engaging way for younger audiences. For example, in addition to interviews with academics and archival footage that are typical of WWII documentaries, it features actors recreating key moments in the history of the war, giving the series the feel of watching a silent movie.

Saving Private Ryan (1998 film)

Steven Spielberg’s war epic stars Tom Hanks as US Captain John H Miller, tasked with locating Matt Damon’s Private Ryan to have him sent home because his three other brothers had been killed in action.

Upon its release in 1998, World War II veterans found the combat scenes, including the opening sequence of D-Day, incredibly realistic of their own experiences with some even unable to continue watching. Although not quite everything was historically accurate.

The Liberator (2020 series)

A diverse, deeply brave crew of ragtag soldiers become some of the most heroic fighters of the European invasion in World War II. The series consists of four episodes based on true events. Maverick U.S. Army officer Felix "Shotgun" Sparks and his infantry unit fight for more than 500 days to liberate Europe.

On July 10, 1943, a unit from Oklahoma composed of Native Americans, Mexican Americans and Dust Bowl cowboys, most of whom couldn't drink together in the same bars back home, landed in Sicily and endured a brutal 500 day trek through Nazi-occupied Europe. This is the story of those men, a group of soldiers known as the Thunderbirds.

The Pianist (2002 film)

Roman Polanski’s Holocaust epic is based on the autobiography of the same name by Polish-Jewish pianist and composer Władysław Szpilman. The film follows his incredible survivor story from the Warsaw ghetto to hiding from the Nazis until liberation. Winner of the Palme d’Or, The Pianist also won Best Director for Polanski, Best Adapted Screenplay for Ronald Harwood and Best Actor for Adrian Brody.
