Deal or No Deal returned last year on  ITV with a brand-new host after eight years off our screens.

Taking over the reins from Noel Edmonds – who presented the hit game show on Channel 4 for a decade before it was scrapped – is none other than Stephen Mulhern.

While some elements of the show have changed since it rebooted, the significant elements of the programme have remained the same. This includes the elusive Banker and the tense phone calls contestants receive in the studio during the game.

As fans celebrate the one-year anniversary since the game show was rebooted, we've taken a deep dive inside the role of the mysterious Banker.

The identity of the Banker on the long-running Channel 4 show has always remained a secret. But after the show came to an end in 2016, the star’s identity was finally revealed.

It has previously been reported that during the original series, the Banker role was taken by a man called Glenn Hugill. At the time, the TV star was also said to have been an executive producer on the Channel 4 show.

But fans may be surprised to learn about the broadcaster's surprising history. During his youth, the TV producer was crowned as one of the smartest people living in the UK.

As a schoolboy at the age of 10, he took an IQ test for children under 16, scoring an impressive 207 – the highest score recorded in the country at the time.

Then, according to the Northern Echo, he later took a test designed for adults and clocked a score of 177, which is the highest score that he could register.

But it's fair to say he rose to fame on Coronation Street when he took on the role of a policeman named Alan McKenna in the 1990s before he moved into TV production and presented the TV show, The Mole.

His identity as the Banker was allegedly confirmed by fellow egghead Richard Osman during an interview with the Metro in 2015.

The House of Osmon star opened up about how he devises game shows when he exposed the star's secret identity. Promoting his TV show Two Tribes, he revealed: “[It] was an idea that Glenn Hugill – the Banker on Deal or No Deal – and I had been thinking about for a long time.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see if the quizmaster will let slip the identity of the Banker on the rebooted series.

Deal or No Deal airs on weekdays from 4pm on ITV1 or catch up on ITVX.
