BBC News announce Louise Haigh has resigned as Transport Secretary

BBC Breakfast was halted on Friday morning as Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt announced some breaking news.

As a breaking news banner appeared on screen and behind the hosts, Naga explained to viewers: "The time now is 14 minutes past six, you would have heard earlier that Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has admitted that she did plead guilty after incorrectly telling police that a work mobile phone was stolen in 2013."

Bringing the latest update, Naga continued: "We've just heard now from our chief political correspondent that the transport secretary, Louise Hague, has tended her resignation."

Charlie went on: "Yes, this goes back to a story indeed we were just explaining a moment ago.

"It's understood the incident that was referred to was disclosed in full when she joined the Shadow Cabinet four years ago."

He added: "So it was known within the Labour Party and within the cabinet itself, the Shadow Cabinet then, of course.

"But the news we're hearing this morning, that's just literally in the last few moments, is that Louise Haigh, who is the transport secretary, has resigned."

Naga said Louise had only been on the job for four and a half months before explaining to viewers: "She had previously said that no matter was a genuine mistake, from which she did not make any gains, and she did say that magistrates gave her the lowest possible outcome.

"But just to repeat the transport Secretary Louise Haigh has resigned."

Charlie stated: "Yeah, more on that, of course, throughout the programme this morning with our political correspondent."

Just 10 minutes later, Charlie and Naga turned their attention back to the breaking news story.

Giving a rough overview of the story, the BBC Breakfast presenter shared: "She said she is totally committed to our political project but believes it will be best served 'by my supporting you outside of government'.

"Just to give a little background to that, we know that she has admitted she pleaded guilty after she incorrectly told police that a work mobile phone was stolen. This incident happened in 2013."

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
