A new drama based on an acclaimed book about the The Troubles is set to be released on Disney+. Say Nothing, which is based on Patrick Radden Keefe's critically acclaimed New York Times Best Seller, follows a gripping story of murder and memory in Northern Ireland.

The series covers four decades, starts with the shocking disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of ten from Belfast who was abducted from her home in 1972 and murdered by the IRA.

Her remains were discovered on Louth beach in 2003, after years of relentless searching.

Say Nothing explores the stories of various Irish Republican Army (IRA) members and the extremes that some people will go to in the name of their beliefs in a divided country.

A plot summary from Disney reads:"Spanning four decades, the series opens with the shocking disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of ten who was abducted from her home in 1972 and never seen alive again.", reports the Mirror.

"Say Nothing tells the tale of various Irish Republican Army (IRA) members, exploring the lengths some individuals will go to for their beliefs, how a deeply divided society can suddenly descend into armed conflict, the lasting impact of radical violence on those involved, and the emotional and psychological toll of maintaining silence."

Say Nothing is executive produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, creator Joshua Zetumer, Patrick Radden Keefe, Edward McDonnell, Monica Levinson and Northern Ireland native Michael Lennox. The series is a production of FX Productions.

Say Nothing comprises of nine episodes, with each episode approximately 60 minutes long.

Viewers can binge-watch all nine episodes from Thursday, November 14 exclusively on Disney+.

Who stars in Say Nothing?

Lola Petticrew, recognised for their role in the successful BBC NI drama Bloodlands, is set to portray a young Dolours Price, whose 2013 obituary sparked Keefe's inspiration for the novel. Maxine Peake, renowned for her roles in Shameless, Silk and Black Mirror, will take on the role of an adult Dolours Price.

Dublin-based actress Hazel Douple, known for her appearances in The Miracle Club, The Ulysses Project and TV series Smother, has been cast as Marian, Dolours' sister.

Josh Finan, who starred in Baby Reindeer and The Gentleman, will portray politician Gerry Adams, with Michael Colgan, known for his roles in This England and The Fall, appearing as an older Gerry Adams.

Anthony Boyle, from Masters of the Air and Manhunt, will be seen as hunger striker Brendan Hughes.

Where was Say Nothing filmed?

Filming for Say Nothing took place across Britain, including City Road in the Walton area of Liverpool. The road was transformed into a 70s West Belfast scene complete with vintage cars, a working men's club and an old telephone box.

During the filming in May 2023, the Liverpool Echo captured images and reported scenes of burnt-out cars, rubble strewn across the floor and bricks piled high. Houses on City Road were also adorned with brightly coloured timber frames and buildings were converted into vintage shops.

Additional filming for Say Nothing took place in Belfast, Sheffield and at Shepton Mallet prison in Somerset. West Bexington beach in Dorset was also utilised for filming in 2023.
