BBC's highest-paid list revealed as Gary Lineker's eye-watering salary sparks outrage

The BBC has published its report revealing the salaries of its highest-paid stars, and Gary Lineker has topped the list for the seventh year running.

In 2022-23, the Match Of The Day presenter took home at least £1,350,000. He has managed to equal that figure over the last year, with Zoe Ball coming in at close second. The BBC Radio 2 host was paid a minimum of £980,000 in 2022-23 and this year took home just under that figure. Following the published report, fans expressed outrage over Lineker's eye-watering salary on social media.

One fumed: "Gary Lineker annoys us so much with his stupid comments and can’t stop thinking of the extraordinarily decadent undeserved salary that he demands paid for by the elderly who used to get TV for free until he turned up."

"Gary Lineker £1.35m Talking about football ffs," added a second. Another posted: "What disgrace. Gary Lineker should not be paid that money. Why you getting rid of staff? If anyone goes it should be him."

A fourth agreed: "£1.35m for Lineker to be biggoted and opinion on football occasionally." Echoing this, someone else shared: "@BBCSport what ??? What does he do fgs. Lineker top earner, he presents match of the day, sports personality, that's it? What are you doing."

The third highest-paid BBC star was Huw Edwards, who stepped down from the broadcaster after more than 40 years in April. The 62-year-old hadn't been on air since July 2023 following reports claiming he paid a young person for sexually explicit images.

A statement from BBC read: "After 40 years of service, Huw has explained that his decision was made on the basis of medical advice from his doctors. The BBC has accepted his resignation which it believes will allow all parties to move forward. We don't believe it appropriate to comment further."

While a number of the highest-paid stars haven't been included in the report, the salaries of Antiques Roadshow star Fiona Bruce, radio presenter Greg James and others have been revealed.
