GMB: Steve Baker confuses Ed Balls and George Osborne

Good Morning Britain erupted into chaos on Friday's edition following the results of the General Election as viewers slammed the ITV show's "car crash" interview.

Wycombe MP Conservative Steve Baker has lost his seat after 14 years in power to Labour candidate Emma Reynolds. The Tory Northern Ireland minister declared “thank God I’m a free man” after being defeated in the early hours of Friday, July 5.

Susanna Reid and Ed Balls discussed his loss before the MP suddenly laid into George Osborne, who had joined the presenters on the programme.

Mr Baker mistook Ed's remark believing the former Tory Chancellor of the Exchequer had issued the brutal five-word dig.

Addressing his loss in his constituency, Ed issued a cheeky five-word dig: "The voter's got it wrong?"

"George I'm not having an argument with you," Mr Baker replied. "But if they had said to me they would pass up blue on blue I would have refused."

Susanna corrected: "That was Ed [Balls]," as her co-star echoed that he had in fact asked the MP the question but Mr Baker continued to rant at his former colleague.

"George, you and I have got a lot of history," he commented. "And if only you had fought a better Remain campaign."

Ed attempted to interrupt stating: "It was Ed Balls, not George Osborne," before turning to the former MP and issuing an apology.

During the tense on-air moment, Mr Osborne remained silent and did not react to Mr Baker's comments directed at him.

Viewers reacted with many calling the heated clash a "car crash" interview as they took to social media and said the same thing.

@dan_grey: "Did he lose? Tbf he was comedy gold." While @Cogmeister1 commented: "The Steve Baker interview on #GMB was gold!"

@MartinJBuck quipped: "Steve Baker having a meltdown on #GMB was worth the 9 and a half hour wait."

@TimBlac95216202 agreed: "Steve Baker having a meltdown on #gmb absolute comedy gold especially when he thought he was asked a question by George Osborne but in fact it Ed Balls. Then went on to blame everyone except Sunak and himself. You knew it was gonna be a good one when he said it's a relief to lose."

@Jamesogrady300 wrote: "Steve Baker is a prime example as to why the Tories lost #gmb."

@SunderlandLolly: "What a bitter, blame-everyone rant by Steve Baker on #GMB!! Hilarious!! Bye Steve!!!"

@PJN74 remarked: "Steve Baker on GMB is taking it well… #GMB #GeneralElection2024."

@MrLawGreen added: "Steve Baker on @GMB was hilarious! #GMB #GeneralElection."

It comes as Rishi Sunak will step down as Prime Minister after Labour's landslide victory as Keir Starmer will soon enter Number 10 Downing Street.
