GMB: Ed Balls discusses Rishi Sunak's backlash

Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid was left astounded, declaring: "I don't think we've ever seen this before" as the ITV show 'made history' during a live broadcast.

Susanna and her colleague Ed Balls were in conversation with Tory MP and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride on the eve of the general election. She acknowledged the unusual situation, saying: "I just want to explain to viewers because, as they will notice, there's a technical delay on the line."

"We can't interrupt your answers. They may be very grateful, and you might be as well."

However, the interview took an unexpected twist when the MP began discussing the imminent election, which has shown the Tories trailing behind Labour in the polls with Labour poised for victory.

Mel admitted that a Labour landslide seemed likely prompting Susanna to admit she'd "never seen" a politician acknowledge potential defeat before the actual election results in her career as a broadcaster, reports the Mirror.

He explained to her: "This isn't a by-election. This is a big, serious moment and we need enough Conservatives in Parliament to hold Keir Starmer to account."

To which she responded: "I just want to point out and ask you, that's the first time I've heard a concession speech from a sitting government minister the day before an election rather than the day after a general election."

Mel responded: "Look, Susanna, we're going to fight for every single vote over the next 24 hours. We're here to continuously put across a positive message about the things we've achieved in government."

Viewers on X formerly Twitter were left gobsmacked, with one user exclaiming: "Wow, a concession speech the day BEFORE the election by Mel Stride. The chaotic Conservatives are finished."

Another was stunned, commenting: "Apparently Mel Stride just said goodbye live? ".

In a later segment, Susanna engaged in conversation with Andrew Pierce, probing the Tory supporter: "Do you feel let down by a party that's basically playing a funeral march now?"

To which Andrew responded: "They've made their minds up, it's been 14 years it's time for a change."

Susanna then questioned further: "But isn't the purpose of a party campaign to keep the message out there and stay positive?"
