Coronation Street: Bernie calls out landlord

On Tuesday’s instalment of Coronation Street, ITV viewers saw Gemma Winter (Played by Dolly-Rose Campbell) and husband Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) face yet another blow. As the episode kicked off, people saw them discover their boiler had broken when they had no hot water.

As Gemma decided to call the landlord to try and fix the issue, it was clear she was uneasy about getting him over. Later on, fans of the soap saw the landlord head over to the house as he told them he wanted a second opinion about the boiler.

Telling them he wanted to be sure a new one was needed as they’re expensive to fix, Gemma questioned when he'd be able to get an engineer out. As he told Gemma he’d get back to them the next day, it was clear her mum Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) was less than impressed.

She told him: “No, it’s not fine. You’ve got 24 hours to sort that out as per the tenancy agreement.” Trying to dismiss Bernie, he infuriated her as she reeled off their financial situation.

She continued: “I’m sick of people like him stomping over people like us. You treat us like cattle, walking pound signs.” As he told her he was barely making a profit off of the home, Bernie highlighted how he continues to hike the rent up.

He replied: “Do you not read the news? My mortgage has gone through the roof!!”

She hit back: “And you’ve passed every bit of it onto these two and they've paid without complaint but when they need something doing something which is legally within their rights as tenants to ask for, where are you?

“Nowhere! I don’t know how you sleep at night, you thieving beggar.”

Furious, he stormed out of the house, as he snapped: “You’ve just made my mind up.” Worried over her mum’s outburst, Gemma asked: “What does that mean?!”

Ominously telling her she’d see what he meant, the pair were clearly concerned over what their future in the household would look like.
