House of the Dragon is finally back on screens, and fans have said it is shaping up to ‘top’ Game of Thrones after its ‘incredible’ season two premiere. Airing now on Sky Atlantic, the hit fantasy drama centres around House Targaryen as it faces an era-defining civil war.

The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood and set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during a period when the Targaryen dynasty ruled over the Seven Kingdoms. Released three years after Thrones’ final season, House of the Dragon has proved another big hit for HBO, winning the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama after its first season and boasting a 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

Now after nearly two years off screens, the series is back for its hotly-anticipated second run. Days before the season two premiere, HBO announced House of the Dragon has been renewed for a third season, with the network’s head of drama Francesca Orsi hailing its latest instalment as ‘spectacular’.
