Rishi Sunak quizzed about his wealth
Rishi Sunak has faced yet another blow in his General Election campaign. The current prime minister was invited to appear on Sky TV for a tough interrogation by Sky News political editor Beth Rigby and the studio last night.
He went head-to-head with Labour leader Keir Starmer in the Sky News General Election Debate. The special Sky News programme was the second live TV grilling of the two rivals during the 2024 election campaign.
Last week there was a one-hour debate on ITV, with Julie Etchingham, where they each had just 45 seconds to answer questions. By contrast, the Sky News format gave the two leaders 45 minutes each to answer questions, with Starmer going first and Sunak second.
Sunak faced grilling questions about some of his failings including leaving the 80th anniversary of D-Day commemorations early. But after the special show aired, Sunak faced yet another blow.
It was revealed that people were seemingly more interested in watching "sexy singletons" couple up on ITV's Love Island than they were in what the Conservative leader had to say.

Liam Hamilton, an X (formerly Twitter) user, who often shares TV ratings, delivered the blow.
He wrote: "Close, but with 850k viewers the Sunak & Starmer ‘love-in’ (?) with Beth Rigby (clapping emoji) on the #SkyDebate narrowly fails to top multichannel viewing chart, just pipped by the real thing on ITV2 as 900k watched #LoveIsland…still, one of the largest audiences to Sky News I’ve seen."
Speaking of why Sky decided to air the head-to-head political party special, Sky News' executive editor Jonathan Levy said: “People said they wanted to hear more from Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer. So, Sky News is giving them more time to tell you about their plans for your future.”

The show also offered the live audience in Grimsby a chance to ask questions, really giving the party leaders a good grilling. The audience in "Red Wall" Grimsby on the Sky two-header was drawn from both the local area and across the country.
Grimsby was chosen to host the debate because it is a “key battleground” in the election on July 4.
Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes used to be two constituencies: Great Grimsby, which was Labour from 1945 until it turned Tory at the last election, and Cleethorpes, which was Labour since its creation in 1997 but then went Conservative in 2010.
