Coronation Street: Nathan receives a guilty verdict

viewers have been left less than impressed after the soap announced Bethany Platt’s (played by Lucy Fallon) evil abuser Nathan Curtis (Chris Harper) is returning.

However, it looks as though fans of the programme aren’t thrilled with the news of his comeback as many issued the same complaint. With Coronation Street’s official Instagram sharing an image of Nathan, it wasn’t long before people commented on the announcement.

One fan said: “Is it “Super Villain” time again already? We were only just getting over Stephen”. Another social media user added: “The comeback nobody wanted or asked for.”

@Sunrisesurprizes commented: “History repeating itself, can we not have something new.”@Midgetgem45 reeled: “Why is Nathan coming back he hurt Bethany and now she’s gonna be scared now he’s back I don’t like him.”

One viewer fumed: “Oh god, old stories repeating....BORING!!!! One thing I must say, will he take Bethany away with him?” Although it seemed as though some viewers were looking forward to the villain's return.

@Hannahprentice10 said: “I am so so excited by this. Chris was amazing the first time made us all hate Nathan although I’m sure it’s not good news for Bethany.”

The last time ITV fans saw Nathan on the cobbles was back in 2017 after he was imprisoned for his crimes.

He was charged after grooming Bethany, who was a teenager at the time, as part of a sex trafficking scheme.

Although Bethany believes he’s still locked away, ITV confirmed she’s in for a shock when she spots him at the reconstruction of Lauren Bolton’s (Cait Fitton) last known movements.

As Nathan has been released from prison for some time and is not working at a building site nearby, Bethany’s mind goes into overdrive.

With teen Lauren still missing and believed to be dead, Bethany suspects her former abuser has something to do with her disappearance.

Knowing that Roy Cropper (David Neilson) is behind bars for Lauren’s murder, Bethany is on a mission to bring her attacker to justice, convinced that it’s Nathan.

Touching on his return, actor Chris Harper confessed he enjoys playing the villain and teased this storyline is anything but simple.

He said: “I was emotional when I was told about Nathan's potential return. During the 18 months he was in it before, hundreds of people shared with me how the storyline reflected something they, or someone they loved, had lived through.

“It remains important to keep them in mind as we continue Bethany's story.”

Describing his character as funny, deceitful and ruthless, it looks as though there’s drama on the way.

Chris added: “Now he is also under a lot of pressure too. This new storyline is absolutely full of twists.”

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
