University Challenge marks 'historic win'

BBC viewers all issued the same complaint about the series finale ending. After crowning Imperial University the winners after they scored an impressive 285 points against UCL's 120 points, host Amol Rajan gathered the contestants on top of a roof.

Amol and the contestants were also randomly joined by Top Stoppard and many fans took to social media to question why. One fan said: "Why did all the contestants meet Tom Stoppard at the end? He didn’t present or give a speech. Seems a bit random #UniversityChallenge."

Another went on: "Not a clue what was going on there but Imperial were just phenomenal. #UniversityChallenge." A third asked: "Why were they on a roof? Why was Tom Stoppard there? Why was it shoved on at the end? So many questions. #universitychallenge." (sic)

"What was the point of that at the end, #UniversityChallenge," a fourth commented as someone else wrote: "Interesting rooftop twist there at the end of the #UniversityChallenge final."

"What are they on a roof with Tom Stoppard? #UniversityChallenge," another echoed. However, despite the bizarre ending to the finale, fans were full of praise for Amol and the series as a whole. Brilliant series of #UniversityChallenge. Imperial were superb and worthy champions. Fun relaxed atmosphere created by @amolrajan’s rapport with the teams. Good to see Tom Stoppard at the end too," one fan commented.

As they gathered on the roof, Amol said: "Well to give special congratulations to Imperial on a historic fifth series, we've come to Imperial itself here in the heart of Central London with the Royal Albert Hall just behind us.

"We're going to be joined by one of Britain's foremost playwrights. He is a giant of literature, he's one of the most Garlanded figures writing in English today."

After reeling off Sir Tom's impressive collection of awards, the host continued: "Welcome Sir Tom Stoppard.

"The reason we asked you to come along. You've been very, very generous with your time and word reached us that you're a fan of this show, is that right?"

Sir Tom replied: "Very much so yes, it certainly is right, it's the only show I make a rendezvous with generally speaking."

When asked what he thought of the series and the questions, Sir Tom went on: "My impression is that the questions get a little harder as the years go by and the team's a little cleverer as the years go by."

Amol said: "I know you said in the past that you've talked about how you didn't go to university partly because of historical circumstances.

"You went straight into actually journalism training. Have you ever wished that you had gone to university?"

Sir Tom answered: "Very often. At the time I didn't want to go to university, I was anxious to get on and get a job but 10 years later, I did regret it."

University Challenge is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
