Princess Kate announces she is being treated for cancer

The BBC has issued a statement after it was flooded with complaints from viewers who labelled its coverage of the cancer diagnosis as "insensitive".

Last month, BBC News and other broadcasters issued a video from the Princess herself where she confirmed she was undergoing treatment for cancer. However, it has since been revealed that the BBC received an influx of complaints over their coverage.

According to the broadcaster's complaints report, the BBC "received complaints from people who feel our coverage of the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis was excessive and insensitive." The BBC has since released a statement responding to viewer complaints.

It read: "We broadcast in full the highly personal video message from the Princess of Wales, in which she spoke directly to the public about her cancer diagnosis. Our coverage reflected the significance of this story and the outpouring of support for the princess from around the globe.

"We explained to our audience what was known about Catherine’s condition, but did not speculate on details that had not been made public."

The statement went on: "Our reporting made clear that this is a difficult time for the princess and the rest of the Royal Family; we have been mindful at all times to approach our coverage with sensitivity.

"As part of our analysis, we examined the intense speculation there had been in the preceding weeks about the princess’s health.

"We also reported on Catherine’s request for privacy and detailed the statement from Kensington Palace regarding the princess having the right to privacy in relation to her medical issues."

"We always give careful consideration to the editorial decisions we make. While we have a responsibility to report on stories that are of interest to our audience, we appreciate that not everyone would have approved of the approach we took," the statement concluded.

In the video released by BBC News, the Princess of Wales said to viewers: "Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."

She also noted the need for privacy during this challenging period: "We need some time, space and privacy while I undergo my treatment."

"We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery."

Additionally, she remarked: "At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."
