MasterChef viewers mercilessly mocked one contestant's dish this evening, declaring it should have gone "straight in the bin". Tearful rare-breeds farmer Louise had chosen courgettes as her basic ingredient, and presented them three ways - but over on Twitter, followers of the BBC show were less than impressed.

She'd cooked up a storm, offering the courgettes pureed with wild garlic, griddled and topped with a lamb fat crumb in a lemon and mint dressing, with a roast lamb fillet and a honey and feta dressing. While Gregg Wallace enthused that the lamb was "cooked to perfection", scathing at-home critics sneered: "Series 562 of #MasterChef and still no f***er has cooked lamb properly!"

"When Gregg says the standard was 'all high', I assume he means 'all s***'? #MasterChef," one viewer chimed in. Another exclaimed: "Courgette 3 ways … all 3 ways should be 'straight in the bin'!"

Louise's mission was to take a standard everyday item and turn it into "something spectacular" - but her choice of courgettes didn't go down well online. "Courgettes, you say? Nah… Water in a green skin. There’s less mush on an Arctic sleigh. #MasterChef," one bemused viewer wrote.

Another took aim at the humble vegetable too, quizzing: "Is serving courgette alongside a lovely piece of lamb really elevating the courgette? "If I put some sliced onion on a gorgeous rare wagyu burger would that be elevating the onion? #MasterChef."

Meanwhile, despite Louise announcing her profession as "farmer", a couple of viewers seemed sceptical about whether or not she had really been getting her hands dirty.

"She definitely doesn't farm anything herself with that accent!" one tweeter joked.

Despite the frosty reception her dishes received with the public, when it came to crunch time, Gregg offered his wholehearted support for her.

"Your lamb is cooked to perfection!" he enthused, before praising the puree and assuring her that the flavour was "just wonderful".

John Torode agreed that the dishes were "absolutely ace", insisting: "If that was served to me in a restaurant, I'd be very, very happy with it!"

Her eyes had been brimming with tears as she seemingly prepared to be shamed with the judges, only for the mood to change as she began to cry tears of joy instead.

"I can't believe the comments - I've watched MasterChef forever and that rarely happens - and I can't believe it's little old me!" the amazed would-be chef exclaimed.

One fan marvelled: "She was in tears before they even tasted her food!"

Meanwhile, in another emotional MasterChef moment, Gregg and John recently confirmed their intentions to remain on the show after 17 successful years, with John joking on The One Show: "Who would we leave it to? Don't be ridiculous!"
