Derek Draper, dissolved into tears during one painfully poignant moment as he struggled to stand up and was forced to clutch onto a walking frame. The no-holds-barred documentary on Kate Garraway's husband depicts his visible frustration as he undergoes mobility therapy.

The former Labour lobbyist turned psychotherapist died earlier this year after an almost four year battle with Long Covid complications - and Kate filmed exactly what she faced behind the scenes. Heartbreakingly, Kate was also tearful as she confessed she needed to work out whether she "felt loved" by him, after their relationship as husband and wife changed when she became his carer.

The 56-year-old, who previously created the documentaries Finding Derek and Caring for Derek, admitted that she'd "accepted" she had a future as a carer. However, she warned at the time: "How that translates into the relationship is a work in progress.”

She said she'd come to terms with the fact that the small romantic gestures - making her a cup of tea or spontaneously buying her a bunch of flowers - was unlikely ever to happen again. "He can't do that any of those things for me, so he's trying to work out how to love me.

"I know he loves me, but how does he show that? And I'm trying to work out if I feel loved by him.... we have got a whole journey to go on." As well as the pain of watching her once competent husband being reduced to a fraction of his former self, Kate also detailed the financial woes she's experienced as a carer.

"Derek's care costs more than my salary from ITV and that is before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids, so we are at a crunch point," she lamented.

She divulged that she had been in debt, but "can't earn enough money to cover my debt because I am managing Derek's care".

Kate has received a backlash from some corners, who have claimed she's monetising her husband's illness, with Katie Hopkins making harsh comments, but in the new documentary, she makes it clear that capturing the reality of life looking after him was his idea.

She shared that, at the start of 2023, he'd quizzed of her: "Are we making another documentary?"

He'd then added with certainty: "I think we should."

"He said: 'I think I would like to be heard and I would like it to be me telling it,' so we then spent a lot of time working out how [to achieve that]," she explained.

Heartbreakingly, she then added: "A lot wasn't recorded because nobody expected him to be taken from us."

Derek died on January 3 2024, just days after suffering a heart attack and undergoing 14 hours of neurosurgery in Mexico - and he was given a send-off at the Church of St Mary The Virgin in Primrose Hill, the same location where he and Kate first married.

Kate Garraway: Derek's Story airs tonight at 9pm, on ITV.
