Antiques Roadshow: Guest suprised by valuation of necklace

Expert Susan Rumfitt left one guest speechless on Antiques Roadshow after she told them the staggering value of their family heirloom. A lady brought a stunning necklace to the BBC programme which had been in her family for generations.

The expert specialises in buying and selling high-end jewellery, while also being an accredited lecturer for the Arts Society and holds regular courses for budding learners of the trade.

Being a beloved member of the show, she has come across a list of memorable items including a gold bracelet originally belonging to Queen Victoria, with the lucky owner confessing that they had found it in the street.

On the show, she was presented with a colourful statement piece. She told the owner: “Well, this is definitely a necklace for every outfit that you own in your wardrobe. You would be able to wear it with anything.

Before asking: “How did get this into your collection?”. The woman responded and admitted that it belonged to her great aunt – which has since been passed down through her family from generation to generation.

Susan said: “This is absolutely beautiful isn’t it, we have got an abundance of stones going throughout the necklace.”

She then began to point to the colourful necklace that sat on a golf chain that encased the stones. Susan then individually named them, and said: “Turquoise, Amethyst, Peridot, and Citrine.”

The presenter gushed over the stunning design and added: “It’s something for everybody really, it is just superb.”

After closely inspecting it and giving it a once over, she believed that it dated back to the late 19th century - which would mean that it had been passed down for hundreds of years.

Curious to find out if the owner had ever worn the dazzling neckpiece which oozed elegance thanks to over 20 stones, she put the question to her.

Although given how precious the item was, the woman admitted that she had only taken it out once, suggesting that she keeps it under lock and key.

Susan went on to reveal the eye-watering price she believed the necklace would fetch, which caused fans gathered round to gasp.
She said: “If you did decide to sell it and it went into auction, we would be looking to put a rough estimate between £5,000 and £7,000 on it.”

The lady looked completely shocked and taken aback by the four-figure sum.
The crowd behind could not quite believe what they were hearing either as there was a brief moment of silence.

As she began to get her head around its value, she then beamed from ear to ear, after appearing lost for words.

Confident that it would be sold in a heartbeat, the expert said: “It’s one of those bits of jewellery that would absolutely fly. I just love it.”

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
