ITV series Trigger Point has been branded "too woke" by furious Twitter followers over its suggestion that a far right political group could be responsible for a bomb alert seen in last night's episode. Met Police bomb disposal expert Lana Washington (played by Vicky McClure) had some tense moments - but viewers didn't hesitate to tweet their views about the cause of them.

"#TriggerPoint. Wow… didn’t know the biggest threat of terrorist bombs on our streets is from far right groups? More woke, biased, mind bending nonsense from @itv," one follower raged. "Well done @itv you made a great idea #triggerpoint into another load of wokeycokey b******t," another viewer groaned.

Then a third sarcastically groaned: "Thank God for the Far Right otherwise ITV couldn't have #TriggerPoint tonight." Meanwhile, a fourth blasted that he'd never heard of any deaths from terrorist attacks in the UK perpetrated by members of far right groups.

Various recent attacks, including, for instance, the 2017 Westminister Bridge attack and the Manchester Arena, London Bridge and Parson's Green bombings the same year, have all been linked to Islamic extremism. In contrast, there was also a 2017 incident where a white man drove into a group of Muslim worshippers, while the murder of MP Jo Cox the previous year was described by a judge as motivated by "violent white supremacism".

The feeling among Twitter users last night, however, was that the role of right wing groups in terrorism was being "over-played". Meanwhile, one viewer made an interesting observation not long after the start of the show.

"Sorry but how is that John [played by Kris Hitchen] still employed as a bomb expert for the Met? Wasn't he part of a right wing terrorist group in the last season telling them how to build bombs????"

Besides branding the series "too woke", some viewers found themselves getting irate after they spotted that a bomb on the show featured a visible countdown timer.

"If you’re building a bomb, why make the timer display visible? It defeats the object and allows people to escape," one criticised.

"That episode would be greatly improved if you weren't trying to convince me that baddies put countdown timers on bombs," another agreed.

The British Army's first ever female bomb disposal expert, Lucy Lewis, shed some light on the matter, telling the Metro: "None of us have ever seen a digital countdown clock. It is just not a thing."

She explained that some details were "horribly inaccurate", but that the show is "not allowed to put things that are more accurate".

"You do get some daft sequences - timer countdown on a explosive device about to hit zero and the guy detonating the controlled explosion to stop it still counts 3-2-1!!!! WTF!" exclaimed a third.

Despite the various gripes, Vicky received a flurry of compliments for her "gripping" acting performances, being credited with "carrying the entire TV series on her shoulders".

"Woah #TriggerPoint is a gripping bit of TV!! It had me hiding behind the pillow at one point," raved one fan.

Another compliment came from a viewer saying: "So happy #TriggerPoint is back, it’s been 48 hours since #TheTraitorsUK finished, and I’ve already been missing my nightly dose of bone tingling tension and anxiety, Trigger Point fills that gap nicely."

When the first series aired back in 2022, it swiftly became ITV's best-performing drama of the year, averaging a huge 9.5 million viewers per episode.

Trigger Point returns next Sunday on ITV at 9pm.
