The second episode of the new Gladiator series kicked off on Saturday as BBC viewers continued to watch the new generation of superhumans.

On Saturday night, hosts introduced a new batch of contestants to battle it out against the The episode saw ordinary contestant Jake take on John and the Gladiators for the men’s side.

Whereas the women's team saw Marie Louise up against four superhumans and player Zoe. However, when it came to the game Gauntlet, viewers were less than impressed.

The premise of the game was for the contestants to be able to get past four of the professional athletes in 30 seconds. Each zone of the strip was being protected by a Gladiator, with two points being awarded for every zone cleared.

It wasn’t long before viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts as many fumed that the challenge seemed too easy for the athletes. @gbutler0385 commented, "That Gauntlet effort from the #Gladiators was rather pathetic."

@supermac82 added: "I’m sure the gauntlet used to be far harder. Remember contestants being smashed over the sides #gladiators.” @jodieportugal added: "Eight seconds to clear the gauntlet for Zoe that was too easy, for everyone.”

@ryanthesoapking said; "That was easy for Zoe on Gauntlet. Everyone's smashing it so far. This week's Gauntlet seems easier than last week #Gladiators.”

@ozzyeasybiker tweeted: "So after seeing the first week & this week I think we can all say that the Gladiators were made of different stuff back in the day. Shadow, Warrior etc were immense. These lot may find it difficult stopping a baby.”

@markmspalmer added: "These new #Gladiators are pretty hopeless at gauntlet - they need to go & watch the 90’s lot to see how they do it".

However, some of the challenges are no easy feat as one of the super athletes sustained a major injury while filming.

Gladiator Comet, whose real name is Ella-Mae Rayner, broke her ankle and foot in multiple places, ruptured three ligaments and dislocated a bone while taking part in the series.

It resulted in her having to take three months to recover as she shared snippets of her healing on social media.

The 28-year-old was seen with her foot in a brace while in a wheelchair, before taking small steps on her crutches.

Touching on the injuries, she told the “I think it goes to show how tough it is - even the professional athletes get hurt as well.

“You can train as much as you want, but you can't set that [Gladiators' set] up in your garden, you can't replicate it.”

However, it seems as though the Gladiator star has fully recovered as she revealed her fitness is now back up.

Other Gladiators in this series include the likes of Legend, Fury, Diamond, Viper and Fire.

Gladiators continues Saturdays on BBC One from 5:50pm.
