Dame Esther Rantzen reveals how long she has left to live

star Nicola McLean explained she is backing Dame Esther Rantzen's call for people to sign a petition demanding for assisted dying to be legalised. It comes as the TV legend, 83, demanded MPs urgently debate and then vote to change the law.

Former glamour model Nicola, who took part in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2008 alongside the journalist and television presenter, expressed her support for Esther, who was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer last year.

She told : "Esther Rantzen is asking for the public to get behind patients like her and wants everyone to sign a petition for assisted dying, which is so sad.

"I was in I'm a Celebrity with Esther Rantzen. I love her. She's such a lovely woman.

"She's had an unbelievable career, she's a fantastic mother."

In a discussion during Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster on Monday, Nicola continued: "I totally back her to be able to make her own decision, rather than going in a terrible way.

"She can make a choice then and her family will know when it's going to happen.

"I know her daughter's saying, 'Don't judge me and don't say that I want my mum to die, because my mum’s my person… I want to respect her choice.'"

She added: "It feels like she should be able to - we all should be able to make a choice, shouldn't we?

"I'd definitely be getting behind Esther."

Dame Esther recently pleased: "If you believe, as I do, it is time that Parliament debated this most sensitive issue please sign this petition.

"It is our life, it surely should be our choice, and for patients like me, it is urgent."

The Daily Express Give Us Our Last Rights crusade calls for assisted dying to be legalised for terminally ill people who are mentally sound and expected to die within six months.

Under the current ban, family members who answer pleas for help to die can be jailed for conspiracy to murder, an “outdated and restrictive” practice that has prolonged the agony of slow and painful deaths for millions of families.

Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster airs weekdays from 6am on GB News.
