You know it's going to be a good month for gaming when there aren't enough hours in the day to play everything that's out soon. As 2025 gets closer to the finish line, September is paving the way for a very busy period on the gaming calendar, as several high-profile releases join highly anticipated indie games this month.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a sequel to a series that many considered to be almost as dead as the Emperor of Mankind, Capcom is showing other studios how it's done with another compilation of its classic arcade games, and Yars Rising looks like a fascinating reimagining of an Atari retro treasure.
That's just the tip of a packed iceberg in September, as there'll also be a new Legend of Zelda game and fresh terror from the Dead by Daylight universe, and pop sensation Hatsune Miku is going to show you how to throw a few jabs on the Switch. The Casting of Frank Stone

While the spooky season only officially begins in October, Supermassive Games is getting a headstart with The Casting of Frank Stone this month. The storytelling talents of the Dark Anthology developer meets the Dead by Daylight universe in this game, as a group of young friends discover the bloody legacy of, you guessed it, Frank Stone, the infamous serial killer. Like other Supermassive Games, every decision you make shapes the story and will ultimately define the fate of the cast in this high-stakes horror game.
Age of Mythology: Retold
- Release date: September 4
- Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S
A strategy game from the current Age of Empires team, Age of Mythology: Retold swaps historical accuracy for fantasy as players wield god-like powers in real-time combat. This is a remaster of the 2012 game, and as you'd expect, it features some impressive visual and artistic upgrades alongside several quality-of-life improvements.
What the Car?
- Release date: September 5
- Platforms: PC
From the developer behind What the Golf and What the Bat comes another slice of absurdist comedy that'll you want to go into as clueless as possible. Basically, you're a car with legs and you'll race through hundreds of unique levels while doing some really silly stuff along the way. Does Forza Horizon feature a laser-cow that you should avoid at all costs? We didn't think so, so check and mate.
Fitness Boxing Featuring Hatsune Miku

Just because the summer season is coming to an end doesn't mean that you should let your cardio guard down. With Japan's greatest cultural export--virtual idol Hatsune Miku--you can do some great boxing workout routines while the pop star encourages you to keep pace. Don't just do it for your general wellbeing; do it for Hatsune Miku.
NBA 2K25
- Release date: September 6

Another year, another trip to a stadium for a fresh season of basketball action. This year, developer Visual Concepts is promising the "biggest change" yet to its game engine with the use of new dribbling mechanics, and there'll be several other subtle but impactful tweaks to the game when it launches.
El Paso, Elsewhere

One of GameSpot's favorite games of 2023, El Paso, Elsewhere is a cool-as-hell Max Payne-style shooter with supernatural elements. Originally released on PC and Xbox Series X|S, it's headed to PS5 this month and is definitely worth checking out for its superb action, emotional storytelling, and killer soundtrack.
Astro Bot

Is it too early to already have the strongest contender for game of the year? In a month of wonderfully pleasant games, Astro Bot looks adorable and engaging as PlayStation's best mascot gets a "new beginning" on the PS5. Astro's Playroom was already one of the best--and free!--games on PS5, and this new adventure starring the plucky bot doubles down on giving players a diverse series of worlds to explore while pushing the haptic feedback features of the DualSense controller to new immersive levels of fun.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2

When the original THQ was dissolved, it looked like a sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine would never be realized. More than a decade later, Saber Interactive has rescued that series from obscurity and is ready to continue the fight. So far, the sequel looks like a brutal and satisfying action experience that combines an incredible sense of scale with gameplay that truly makes you feel like one of Mankind's greatest defenders. With PvE and PvP gameplay, an inspiring approach to post-launch content, and hordes of heretical enemies to mow through, Space Marine 2 could be one of the most cathartic games of the year.
Yars Rising

While the last reboot of Yars Revenge was met with negative reception for its clunky design and on-rail shooter elements, Shantae and River City Girls developer WayForward might have what it takes to revive Atari's cult-classic 1982 game. The studio has reimagined Yars Rising as a cyberpunk metroidvania, and in a cool nod to its roots, it features arcade-game terminals that protagonist Emi "Yar" Kimura must hack in order to gain new powers and enhance her existing skills. This creates a fun gameplay loop, and in true metroidvania style, will allow you to revisit sections of the game that were previously out of reach.
Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics

Capcom has raised the bar for classic game compilations, and in its latest collection of fighting game classics, it's headed back to the arcade to take on Marvel. Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics continues the current golden age of fighting games with a selection of games like X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes in this release. Similar to Capcom's other retro compilations, the games come with a ton of extra content, like concept art and music, as well as helpful assists like one-button combos.
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown

It has been a long journey for Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, but it's finally ready to race into view. After several delays and the decision to ditch last-gen platforms, the Nacon-published game is aiming to be the most-polished entry in the series to date, and it'll feature a massive replica of Hong Kong to treat as your personal racetrack. This time, the focus is on the lifestyle of racers from both sides of the tracks, as wealthy car collectors will duke it out with street-level drivers to see who's the best behind the wheel.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePop

Another game that had a lengthy delay, Lollipop Chainsaw RePop brings cheerleader--and skilled zombie-hunter--Juliet Starling into a new decade with this remake. This new version of the 2012 game is attempting to stay as close as possible to the cheery but obscene design of the original game, but it has received several welcome quality-of-life changes and a heck of a graphical glow-up.
Wild Bastards

Much more than just a Wild West version of Void Bastards, Wild Bastards expands on the strategy, FPS, and roguelike design of its predecessor to deliver a deeper and more varied experience. This time, you'll be exploring the galaxy, managing your crew of outlaws, and gunning down countless enemies in a game that cleverly combines several systems and gameplay mechanics into a smooth experience.
Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines

For something lighthearted, you can check Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines this month. Like its predecessor, you'll take control of the really good boy Pablo as he uses his grappling hook to zip across levels and worlds throughout the cosmos. Along the way, you can complete challenges, earn new skills, and try your hand at speedrunning with time-trial missions.
Final Fantasy 16

More than a year after it first landed on PS5, Final Fantasy 16 is making a trip to PC this month. An action-packed adventure that tells the tragic tale of Clive Rosfield as he wages war against gods and monsters, the PC version of Final Fantasy 16 features several technical upgrades when compared to the console edition.
The Plucky Squire
- Release date: September 17
- Platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Switch
At long last, The Plucky Squire is ready to set out on a grand adventure in September. The game features charming graphics that flip between 2D storybook 3D adventure, and follows a young boy named Jot who discovers that he's destined to be the villain of the fantasy book Humpgrump. Desperate to rewrite his story, he journeys across the land to change his fate.
UFO 50
- Release date: September 18

Looking to get the most value for your cash this month? UFO 50 might be right up your alley, as the developers of several acclaimed indie games--such as Spelunky and Downwell--have joined forces to create a compilation of 8-bit games. Encompassing 50 games across several different genres, these are "complete" games according to the developers and the collection is inspired by the multi-game cartridges of the '80s. Half of the collection features local multiplayer, including co-op and versus options, and each game is designed to look and sound like an 8-bit retro game.
God of War: Ragnarok

Sony has kept to its schedule of releasing first-party games on PC two years after they were first released on PS5, and this month, it's time for God of War Ragnarok to leap onto a new platform. The sequel to 2018's God of War, Ragnarok is a gorgeous and thrilling action game that sees Kratos reluctantly interfere with the Nordic pantheon of gods. Bigger and bolder, it's a game that satisfying concludes the latest God of War saga, and PC players will be able to experience this tale with a host of extra technical features. Just make certain that you have enough space, as the game requires a chunky 190GB of storage.
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster
- Release date: September 19

Frank West? He's covered wars, you know! Capcom's favorite photojournalist and zombie-killing machine is back this month, and this new version looks like it'll be faithful to the original game, warts and all. Visually, Dead Rising Remastered features a major graphical overhaul through Capcom's proprietary RE Engine, and while the original gameplay mechanics have been kept intact, several quality-of-life upgrades have been added. It's launching first as a digital game, but Dead Rising fans can grab a physical edition in November.
Frostpunk 2
- Release date: September 20

Originally scheduled to launch in July, developer 11 Bit Studios delayed its ice-cold city-building strategy game to September so that it could address some fan feedback from a recent beta. Now that it has received some extra polish, players can look forward to a sequel where they're encouraged to think bigger and work toward creating a stable metropolis set in a frigid and unforgiving wasteland. Every choice has a consequence, and with various factions to contend with, it's going to be tricky balancing their demands with the needs of your citizens.
Tiny Glade

If epic Nordic deicide and using Hong Kong as a test track for your new Ferrari don't appeal to you, then maybe Tiny Glade will appeal to you. If you adore games that allow to express your creativity, you'll get a kick out of this little sandbox that lets you construct your own castle, as it features smooth free-form building gameplay. There's no high score to beat, and no wrong answer with what you want to build. It's just a pile of masonry Lego in a meadow that you can use to construct a feudal getaway at your own pace.
Greedfall 2: The Dying World

Launching in early access on PC, Greedfall 2 flips the script as it puts you in the boots of a Teer Fradee native seeking to regain their freedom. With the world scarred by the Malichor plague and the game themed around the idea of discovery, Greedfall 2's tale will unfold on the continent of Gacane, a land ravaged by war, industrialization, and worst of all, politicians.
Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed

- Platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch
At long last, Epic Mickey is arriving on new platforms, as this game was originally released for the Wii back in the distant year of 2010. A touching tale about forgotten characters and bringing them back into the spotlight, the game focuses on Mickey and the magical paintbrush he wields that allows him to restore or erase characters from existence. The game has received a substantial graphical upgrade--especially when compared to the 480p original--and it'll have improved controls when it launches on a bunch of consoles and PC this month.
Ara: History Untold

Fans of strategy 4X games have been eating well lately, and this month, Ara: History Untold will let players explore multiple eras of humanity as they race to build a dominant civilization. Like other games in the genre, there's more than one way to emerge victorious, as diplomacy, wonder, and old-fashioned warfare are just some of the routes you can follow in this turn-based strategy game.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

While we're still waiting for that Wind Waker HD port to Switch--Nintendo, we've waited long enough--there is some fun to be had in Hyrule this month with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. A brand-new adventure starring Princess Link Zelda, the game has been developed in the Link's Awakening remake's art style and sees Zelda use the power of Echoes to create duplicates of any item she finds the echo for. The game brings back some well-known areas for fans to explore and Zelda can even ride a cute horse on her journey to save Hyrule.
EA Sports FC 25
- Release date: September 27
- Platforms: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch
It's the sophomore year for the FIFA-less EA Sports FC, as the 2025 season will see some interesting tweaks to the soccer simulator. The big draw this year is the new FC IQ system, something that EA describes as "a complete overhaul of the game's tactical system," and will allow for more in-depth tactical play. Beyond that, you can expect the usual selection of official teams and leagues, and a career mode where you'll go from rookie sensation to all-time great.
