David LaChapelle Unveils First Major Art Edition in a Decade

TASCHEN has released ‘David LaChapelle: Lost and Found. Good News,’ a two-volume art edition with three signed prints. It’s David LaChapelle’s first major release in a decade, capturing the chaos and beauty of his career.

‘Lost + Found’ kicks off in 1980s New York, where LaChapelle sharpened his teeth under Andy Warhol and ‘Interview’ magazine. He quickly became a force in fashion photography, blending sex, celebrity, and surrealism in a way only he could. ‘Good News’ covers his rebirth after stepping out of the spotlight in 2006, retreating to Hawaii to rediscover his creativity. What emerged was a mix of high-gloss, consumerist critique and spiritual exploration.

“This is an intimate tour through LaChapelle’s thematic evolution, narrated by the world-class photographer himself. Throughout, we discover an unrivaled critical and creative eye, in thrall to hyper-polished sexuality, as much as to the profound questions of human existence,” as per a press statement. The late iconic American fashion and portrait photographer, Richard Avedon, once expressed: “Of all the photographers inventing surreal images, it is Mr. LaChapelle who has the potential to be the genre’s Magritte.”

Featuring over 300 unpublished images, you’ll find shots of everyone from Tupac Shakur to Naomi Campbell, and see LaChapelle’s style evolve—from the Baroque to Pop, raw to polished. Limited to 500 copies, each comes with three signed prints and is now available to purchase on TASCHEN for $2,500 USD.

Not too long ago, we connected with David LaChapelle to discuss what keeps him motivated after 40 years of documenting the biggest names in the world.
