Tolia Astakhishvili: between father and mother marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. Situated in NYC’s SculptureCenter, the show features site-specific installations, architectural interventions, drawings and collaborative works.
Tolia’s work transforms existing spaces—constructing walls and dividers, lowering ceilings and introducing traces of human presence—to explore architecture's role and how it is altered by human existence. Her work challenges a building’s capacity to exist in its space by overlaying it with new structures, layers of used objects and other debris. What's more, Tolia adds figures and elements from her ongoing drawing practice, borrowed artworks, and audio compositions in the presentation to reinforce the theme.
Born in 1974 in Tbilisi, Georgia, Tolia currently lives and works between Berlin and Tbilisi. She is one of the 10 recipients of the 2024 Chanel NEXT PRIZE, an international award fostering innovation in arts and culture. The exhibit runs until August 12, 2024.
