As technology rapidly advances, how to design and utilize AI ethically and safely is an ongoing debate in the industry. While some have expressed their fears over the fast-growing presence of AI in our daily lives, others are optimistic about the potential benefits it can offer now and in the coming years.

In an effort to provide insight into AI safety and security, the US government has tapped leading names in the space to form an advisory board. Housed under the Department of Homeland Security, the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board was created to help advise both the government and the broader public “on the safe and secure development and deployment of AI technology.”

Among the more recognizable names on the board are OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Google’s Sundar Pichai. There’s also Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, along with another dozen or so leading authorities in tech.

Part of the board’s focus will be on demonstrating how AI can be leveraged for the common good. They’ll also provide guidance on how to prevent harmful uses of AI that pose risks to “national or economic security, public health or safety.”

“AI technology is capable of offering immense benefits to society if deployed responsibly, which is why we’ve advocated for efforts to test the safety of frontier AI systems to mitigate potential risks,” Amodei said. “We’re proud to contribute to studying the implications of AI on protecting critical infrastructure with other leaders in the public and private sectors.”
