Four years ago, Australian brand Merchants of the Sun burst onto the accessories scene with the aim of redefining sustainable jewelry through a considered blend of contemporary design and skilled craftsmanship. Now, having met its goal of creating a portfolio of zero-waste pieces, we take a look at what led this brand to become a frontrunner in environmentally-friendly, luxury jewelry.
At the time of its conception in 2020, the fashion industry already had a seemingly well-established approach to sustainable production. Meanwhile, in the jewelry market, brands and independent makers were trailing somewhat behind with either trend-driven throwaway pieces or unaffordable fine jewelry. It was this lack of consciously made rings and necklaces, as well as his own passion for the outdoors in Australia and Bali, that inspired founder Matthew Banks to set up the brand and carve out a new space in the jewelry industry.
In an exclusive interview, the surfer-turned-jewelry maker rewinds to the brand’s early days, explaining his initial creative approach. “I was looking for motifs and symbols to apply into my designs,” he says. From its signature sun logo to palm trees and swallows, Banks’ hand-engraved processes were etched onto signet rings and pendants. Looking to develop his pieces with an “enhanced understanding of the jewelry possibilities,” he later went on to incorporate enamel, gemstones, and more complex pattern work onto necklaces, chains, and bracelets.
However, what gives this brand its sustainable status is the hard-wearing base materials such as recycled sterling silver as well as 18k vermeil gold. Pairing these durable metals with classic patterns, it creates pieces that are designed to withstand the test of time. Leaving no stone unturned in the buying journey, each accessory that Merchants of the Sun puts out are also packaged in an innovative SugarFlex pouch which repurposes organic matter to create a plastic alternative case ready for its consumer. Its pursuit of a full 360° sustainable company doesn’t stop there. In 2021, Merchants of the Sun began partnering with offsetting projects such as Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, and as a result became the first Australian brand to be officially audited and certified by the Climate Active initiative.
With an inspiring backstory and an equally desirable portfolio of jewelry pieces, the brand has quickly gained a cult following across the globe. The founder shares how the brand is experiencing a “really strong growth stage” and recently opened its first store in Australia. Going back to the shores that started it all, Banks also plans to open locations in Indonesia, using the space as a way for customers to learn more about the brand, explore the pieces, and experience the complete Merchants of the Sun lifestyle.
