Hypebeast Flea New York Vendor Spotlight: THE SERIES

Ahead of Hypebeast Flea New York on May 18 and 19, Hypebeast is spotlighting each of the event's more than 30 vendors by giving an overview of their practice, their inspirations, and what they plan to bring to the event. Hypebeast Flea New York is free to attend — RSVP HERE

Knitwear designer Ella Wiznia founded THE SERIES in 2016, after educating herself on fashion's colossal environmental impact on the planet. She committed to exclusively using secondhand and sustainable materials in her design craft, spotlighting the mediums historically tied to women’s domestic work. Wiznia reimagines crochet blankets, vintage bedding, and embroidery samples as modern statement pieces, including granny dresses, chore sets, floral balaclavas, and rolled-brim hats. THE SERIES’ crowned jewels are its patchwork scarves made from quilt remnants, no two of which are exactly alike.

Explain your brand to people who may not know you yet.

The Series is a brand centered around the exploration of mediums and materials that have historically been tied to traditional craft and domesticity, often overlooked and undervalued due to their association with women's work.Reconstructing vintage crochet blankets, quilt remnants, and pieces of embroidery into one-of-a-kind, wearable garments is an intentional and sustainable effort to honor and elevate the materials and give them a second life outside of the home.

What about New York inspires you the most?

I studied Urban Design at NYU and I absolutely love New York City history. I never get bored of walking around admiring the architecture and thinking about all the different layers of time and people and all their stories we're just constantly surrounded by every day.

What have you got planned at Hypebeast Flea?

We're going to have a big colorful booth planned which may even have a bit of an interactive element to it with vintage patches that people can pin onto any piece of clothing they bring (or buy!). We'll have some of our best selling styles with us and also some one-of-a-kind samples & last of stock pieces from the archives. Expect some BIG BIG SALES (like a $20 rack!!)

What other vendors are you looking forward to checking out at Hypebeast Flea?

We love Berriez! I've also had my eye on a fleece from Strawberry Western for a while. And I'm super excited to check out all the fun accessories from Edie Parker.
