Inside a Milanese palazzo, Samuel Ross created a maze-like, Brutalist-inspired installation of giant orange pipes.
Named "Terminal 02”," the installation marks the launch of the “Formation 02” toilet designed in collaboration with bathroom brand Kohler. Against the backdrop of the Palazzo del Senato, Ross has created an orange-coloured network of industrial pipes that takes its aesthetic cues from Brutalist details, and stands out against the Baroque backdrop.
As visitors walk around the installation, they follow the flow of water, with Ross hoping that it provides “new perspectives” on how it moves naturally, and the way it is controlled.
The color seen across the installation – "Haptic Orange" – pays homage to a product by Kohler released in 1967, named “Tiger Lily”, while also nodding to Ross’s signature hue. From a form perspective, the pipe installation feels distinctively industrial, while the sandy-toned backdrop feels more natural and organic.
The orange is repeated across both the toilet and faucet designed by Ross for Kohler – both of which take their inspiration from the power of water in nature. To create the shapes, Ross made use of unique molding and tooling techniques. While the toilet is angular and looks to have been carved out of rock, the faucet is cylindircal and smooth.
"We continue to look to nature's power and the defining feats of industrial engineering," Ross said. "Be it through the unique embellishments of water character, or through nature's force to reshape the material. Within Formation 02, you will be reminded of the journey water must embark upon."
