Willie Norris for Outlier FW24 Fashions a Chaotic Day in the Life

At Outlier, Willie Norris' IDEAS series is an incubator for exploratory fashion dialogues: for Fall 2023, the experimental fashioner put forth an extraterrestrial collection made realistic with latex prosthetics; and for Spring 2024, the curious visionary made a wardrobe rooted in escapism. Now, in its seventh iteration, Norris' IDEAS series presents its Fall/Winter 2024 manifesto: a fashionable day in the life, titled "Dirty Dirty Jobs."

This collection nods to the "truly filthy chore that getting dressed can feel like," offering solutions to the task that prioritize "escape and empowerment." The line's name is derived from artist Yuki James' Midjourney portrait, which Norris plants on a tank top in look 8. Nick Anderson, co-founder of Bubble_T collective, models the piece, with frosty makeup. "Waking up is cold!" exclaims Norris.

Like previous IDEAS outputs, the designer's latest delivery meets the world on an "impossible runway." Where past seasons saw Outlier's creations come down fictitious catwalks like the brand's design studio, a NYC crosswalk and a treadmill, this collection's runway is a blue construction zone, tucked into a mesh-swathed structure.

Along with Anderson, seven other models — fashion editor and stylist Ian Bradley, writer-comedian-actor Julio Torres and DJ Oscar Nunez included — appear in seven looks each, charting their day from waking up in the morning to entering an imagined club, with green wristbands and slime-y hairdos, at night.

A tailored "Come With Me," Norris' latest Outlier harvest is described as a "collection of capsules." Bradley opens the line, wearing cotton boxers and wrapped in an insulated quilt made from Outlier's Injectexted Linen textile — as if he had quite literally jumped out of bed. His later ensembles include royal blue Harrington jackets in corduroy and tracksuits made of wool-nylon taffeta, inspired by his own personal wardrobe. Each piece belongs to a separate chapter in the collection's itinerary.

Torres, meanwhile, sports graphic pieces with artwork from Zak Krevitt, a longtime IDEAS series collaborator, and Nunez's looks are "weird," "sexy" and "sweet" all at once: most notably, he wears a corduroy overshirt that's both water-resistant and lightweight, with a loose, hemp-cotton construction.

Throughout, notes of lime green hint at the collection's grand conclusion: a club-going longsleeve and workwear pants covered in fluorescent goo (fueling nostalgia for the likes of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen getting "slimed" at the Kid's Choice Awards in 2004). In Norris' world, there's camp, and there's order: between the neon gloop and frostbitten glam, she's crafted a versatile wardrobe of experimental, material-driven and functional garments.
