Anthony Alvarez Envisons a Rave in Space for BLUEMARBLE FW24

Anthony Alvarez has always dreamt of space travel. Constantly influenced by his roots, the BLUEMARBLE designer takes inspiration from Perfumed Nightmare, the cult 1979 film from Filipino director Kidlat Tahimik.

In a post-show interview with Hypebeast, Alvarez detailed the references for his "rave in space" collection. The founder and designer discusses the protagonist of the film, whose sole "dream is to meet the person who builds the bridge between Earth and the ground." He added that the film led him to do more research on space, which Alvarez has always been fascinated with. In his research, he dove deep into the materials human left in space, namely waste discarded by astronauts. References expanded to showcasing "unity and peace" around the world, with designs like "Ban the Bomb" phrases to give a nod to the Peace Corps, relevant in today's global political climate.

This season, BLUEMARBLE brought forward exaggerated silhouettes with dramatic hats, bomber jackets with metallic finishes in copper or silver. The denim jeans were embroidered with rhinestones to mimic shooting stars. Classic wool coats were highlighted in vibrant colors as outfits were completed with custom shoes, all about versatility. From heavy Vibram soled shoes to footwear that were a cross between a slip-on and a hiking boot, the shoes feature metallic details for the futuristic look. Envisioning its function on space, the shoes are meant to be worn in all conditions. Synthetic fur placed a major part in the collection, from dramatic chapeaus to goan coats featuring celestial motifs. Reaching back to his Filipino roots, Alvarez incorporates the Bakunawa dragon, as well.
