This is the horrifying moment a man lost control of a car and mowed down two elderly sisters as they walked past a pub.
Terrifying footage shows disqualified driver Nicholas Adams reversing at high speed before smashing into both women, aged 76 and 82, outside The Dovecote in West Bromwich.
Adams was with two others and travelling as a passenger in a Vauxhall Insignia when it pulled up in the pub car park at around 12.30pm on October 15 last year.
After a minor collision outside the pub, he decided to get into the driver’s seat to move the vehicle.
He can be seen sitting in the front with his right leg hanging out of the open door as he slowly moves, before suddenly speeding backwards and ploughing into the victims.
The women, who asked not to be named, were left trapped under the car with life-threatening injuries for several minutes.
CCTV and footage from a bodycam worn by PC Glenn Brabham captured the incident and the moments that followed as emergency services worked tirelessly to free the women and ultimately save their lives.
One of the women spent 10 weeks recovering in hospital from multiple serious fractures, while the second lady suffered similar injuries and was in hospital for six weeks.
Police arrested Adams at the scene and he was later charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
The 57-year-old was sentenced to three years and 11 months in jail and disqualified from driving for two years at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday.
In a joint statement, the two victims paid thanks to the emergency services and in particular PC Brabham from West Midlands Police’s firearms unit who was one of the first officers on the scene.
They said: ‘My sister and I cannot thank enough the professionals who helped us both on that day and during our long road to recovery.
‘We would like to thank all the emergency services who came to our rescue on that day.
‘Especially PC Glenn Brabham, who played an important part in getting us from under the car.
‘Also, many thanks to the doctors and staff at the QE hospital, Birmingham. Without your help it could have been a different story.’
West Midlands Police said PC Brabham played an ‘integral part’ in the recovery following the collision and ‘courageously’ manoeuvred himself beneath the Vauxhall to get to the two women.
He said: ‘I’d like to extend my best wishes to both ladies for their continued recovery and it makes me happy to hear how well they’ve done so far.
‘It’s a privilege to do my job and I’m proud of what my colleagues and the other emergency services do every day.’
PC Brabham managed to rescue one of the women and firefighters pulled the second woman free.
In recognition of his bravery, he was named the overall winner of the West Midlands Police Federation Bravery Awards earlier this year.
PC John Williams, of the traffic investigations unit who led the investigation, said: ‘Firearm officers happened to be nearby to the pub and PC Brabham didn’t even think twice about getting underneath the car to help the two women.
‘He selflessly prioritised the safety of the women over his own and his actions saved their lives.
‘Adams is rightfully behind bars after not only showing total disregard for his driving disqualification but also for seriously injuring two innocent women who were going about their daily lives.
‘We take road safety incredibly seriously and we will take action against people who choose to drive dangerously in order to protect the community.’
In December last year, a dad-of-two was killed instantly after he was run over by a car being used ‘as a weapon’ during a feud between two families over a wedding.
And just this week, the moment a driver ‘deliberately’ mowed down a man on an electric bike was caught on camera.
