US woman dies after being hit by conch shell in Belize bar fight over golf cart crash

An American woman on vacation in Belize died after being struck in the head with a conch shell in a fight that started when her husband crashed a golf cart into a bar.

Jennifer Lynn Griffith, 46, was in the passenger seat of the cart when her husband, Maynor Rene Ancona, 41, crashed it into El Norte Bar in La Isla Bonita on Saturday night, reported Channel 5 Belize.

The crash spurred a fight between the couple and workers at the bar.

‘It was during that fight that one of the employees threw a conch shell at Griffith, hitting her on the head,’ wrote the news outlet.

Griffith was transported to a hospital but reportedly refused medical care and discharged herself.

But she experienced pain in her head the following day and rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to Channel 5 Belize.

Griffith may have injured her head before being hit by the shell, according to the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams.

‘It is my understanding that prior to the brawl, the lady was on a golf cart along with her husband, and it collided into a building with the golf cart during which she may have also hit her head. She had a concussion,’ stated Williams.

‘And that it was that collision that eventually led to the brawl.’

During the fight, Griffith was ‘stoned with a conch shell, which also caused her head injuries’, Williams said.

Griffith’s cause of death has not yet been determined. Williams said he requested that her postmortem examination be expedited.

‘At this time, we are not able to say what the cause of death is,’ he said. ‘If she died as a result of the conch shell or as a result of the accident.’

Griffith was a Texas native and was living on Ambergis Caye, Belize’s biggest island, for a few years, according to the local news outlet lovefm.com.
