IMPORTANT

1 - Idaho Shooting Leaves Two Dead

Suspect in custody with no clear motivative behind the attack

At around 1:50 p.m. on Monday afternoon, Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee received reports of an active shooter at a shopping mall in town. A policeman was injured during an exchange of gunfire between police and a gunman who matched descriptions of the suspect. Officers shut down the shopping plaza and a secondary crime scene related to the incident to interview witnesses and investigate the area. Boise Mayor Lauren McLean has called for the public and media to respect the privacy of the victims and their families. (Source: AP )

2 - New Rules for Foreign Travelers

Flight restrictions lifted for the first time since start of pandemic

Trump-era travel bans to the U.S., strictly upheld by the Biden administration, are finally being rolled back after long-term pressure from the travel industry. President Joe Biden plans to reopen U.S. borders on November 8th to fully-vaccinated visitors and those with proof of a negative Covid test taken within one day of departure. The new rule tasks airlines with verifying vaccination status before travellers board flights to the U.S. no matter their country of origin. Children under 18 will not have to show proof of vaccination, but they will fall under the Covid test rule. (Source: BBC )

3 - Bezos Announces ‘Space Business Park’

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin plans to launch a commercial space station

Partnering with Sierra Space and Boeing, Blue Origin is working to bring business to the final frontier. By the end of the decade, Bezos plans to create a “mixed-use business park” within the space station with a 10-person capacity. The company hopes the station, called Orbital Reef, will host endeavors like microgravity filmmaking, research or simply function as a space hotel for those who fancy a break from our little blue dot. While plans for the 32,000-square-foot station may seem ambitious, it’s unlikely Blue Origin will find itself strapped for cash, as Bezos has committed to spending $1 billion a year on Blue Origin ventures. 4 - Another Covid Winter?

Deaths slowly rising amid plummeting COVID-19 cases

Schools across the country are considering easing Covid restrictions, but officials warn it may be too soon. Two weeks ago, the daily national death toll from Covid stood at 1,500. Deaths have now reached 1,700 a day. An alarming uptick, given that deaths have been in steady decline since late September. The University of Washington predicts that infections and hospitalizations will further increase in November, prompting some school districts to hold off on relaxing mask mandates. The virus is still running rampant in unvaccinated communities, which are often in rural areas with already struggling healthcare systems. (Source: AP )

1 - Fathers Know Best

Louisiana dads get creative to prevent gun violence at high school

In response to a major outbreak of violence at a Louisiana high school, 40 dads have banded together to form “Dads of Duty.” The group takes shifts spending time at school to greet students and maintain a calm, motivated and safe environment for the students. After weeks of violence, and three arrests, the dads concluded it was time to take action, “We decided the best people who can take care of our kids are who? Are us.” Students at the school have responded positively to the parental presence on campus: They report feeling safer but they could do with fewer “dad jokes” throughout the day. Jordan rookie-season Air Ships sell for nearly $1.5 million

A pair of autographed Nike Air Ships from Michael Jordan’s rookie season sold for a record-breaking $1.472 million at a Sotheby’s auction this weekend. The sneakers, worn during Jordan’s fifth game with the Chicago Bulls against the Denver Nuggets, were originally gifted to Denver Nuggets ball boy Tommie Tim III Lewis. Despite the whopping price tag, the sneakers fall short of the record for most expensive pair of sneakers sold privately. That would be Kanye West’s 2008 Air Yeezy 1 Prototypes, sold in April for $1.8 million. (Source: People , NPR )

3 - The Danger of Desire

Cases of ‘flesh-eating’ STI increase in the UK

A flesh-eating sexually transmitted infection that causes "beefy red" ulcers is on the rise in the United Kingdom. According to the CDC, the STI donovanosis, most common in parts of India, Papua New Guinea, central Australia, the Carribean and southern Africa, has shown a slight uptick in cases in the U.K. since 2016. Though donovanosis is still very rare in the U.S., the rise in infections is drawing new attention, with STIs often going undiagnosed and underreported. Doctors urge caution — and condoms — as other STIs are also on the rise in the United States. (Source: Independent , Forbes )

Cambodia claims 45 artifacts stolen from ancient sites

Government officials in Cambodia have called on New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and other institutions to review at least 43 relics owned or brokered by traffickerDouglas Latchford, as exposed by the Pandora Papers, a trove of highly sensitive secret financial documents obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. The papers revealed that dozens of stolen artworks from the Khmer Empire passed through the hands of Latchford and his associates from the 1970s to the 1990s. In light of new evidence, the Met has met with investigators from the U.S. attorney’s office to cooperate with the inquiry. (Source: NYTimes , TheHill , WaPo )

5 - Hero Hikers

Hikers use their turbans to save men from steep ledge

Five Sikh men hiking in British Columbia used their turbans to rescue two hikers stranded on a steep, rocky ledge over a tumultuous waterfall. One of the Sikh rescuers, Kuljinder Kinda, explained they saw the men but there was no cellphone service in the area to call for emergency rescuers. Quick thinking … and a generous spirit ... inspired them to create a 33-foot rope by unwinding their turbans, religious and cultural headdresses worn by Sikh men to protect their uncut hair. The hikers were praised for their heroism and quick response. (Source: NPR )
