ITV's Grantchester fans will be thrilled to hear that season nine is on its way.

It's been over a year since we last saw Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green, and clergyman Will Davenport, portrayed by Tom Brittney, solving perplexing crimes on ITV.

Now, with more investigations looming, here's everything you need to know about the upcoming ninth season of Grantchester.

Grantchester season 9 start date

The ninth season of Grantchester is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 8, at 9pm on ITV and ITVX, featuring eight episodes in total.

Interestingly, the series has already been released in America back in June 2024 on Masterpiece.

Returning as the show's seasoned star, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, is actor Robson Green, who has been part of the drama since its inception.

Actor Tom Brittney, who has been Green's co-star as Reverend Will Davenport since season four, confirmed last year that he would be departing from Grantchester in the ninth series.

Stepping into his shoes in the crime-infested town is Reverend Alphy Kotteram, played by actor Rishi Nair, known for his four-year stint as lawyer Sami Maalik in Hollyoaks.

The usual cast of Grantchester will be returning, including Charlie Ritchie as Bonnie Davenport, Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating, Al Weaver as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs Chapman, and Oliver Dimsdale as Daniel Marlowe.

Grantchester season 9 plot

As for the plot of Grantchester season 9, it begins with the arrival of a circus in town and what starts off as a joyous event soon takes a dark turn with the death of a magician.

However, the real drama unfolds as Will grapples with his dwindling congregation, leading to speculation that he may be "costing" in Grantchester.

Could this be the way Will departs from the show, making way for Reverend Alphy Kotteram?
