Playing Nice ending explained as ITV thriller uncovers baby-swap truth
As the intense drama Playing Nice concluded on ITVX, the complex characters found themselves entangled in a web of challenging revelations. Pete (played by James Norton), Maddie (Niamh Algar), Miles (James McArdle) and Lucy (Jessica Brown Findlay) all took to the stand in a grueling court trial that would determine the custody fate of young Theo and David.
Under scrutiny, Pete confessed to pining for his previous life when questioned by Lucy and Miles' attorney.
Maddie, on the other hand, faced tough interrogation about her lengthy working hours. But the most shocking truth was reserved for the finale: it was Lucy who had intentionally swapped the babies.
The motive behind this drastic action became clear as it transpired that Lucy was desperate to shield her biological son from the abusive clutches of Miles. In that panic-stricken moment, Lucy made a decision that would haunt her for a long time to come.

Maddie, who had previously battled deep-seated depression, reached out with compassion and understanding to Lucy, a victim of relentless abuse at the hands of her husband.

Lucy had swapped the babies in a moment of panic (Image: ITV)The series is rooted in a book penned by JP Delaney, and it is within the pages of the novel that Lucy's motives for swapping the babies are more thoroughly explored.
Mukta provided insight into this, stating: "She said that she didn't want her son to be raised by a psychopath.
"She felt guilty about the switch until David was revealed to have issues. David having issues and her having the money and love to take care of him balanced her guilt for switching them.
"She also said that once David was revealed to have issues, Miles stopped caring about both of them and left them alone which was a relief to her."

The book's twist ending has provoked mixed reactions among readers, generating a heated debate over Lucy's contentious decision. Taylor expressed frustration: "I understand she was trying to protect her son from Miles but switching the babies makes no sense.
"She wanted to save her son but take home a different baby that would suffer the same way her baby would have? ! This part is eating away at me.
"I REALLY enjoyed the book it was awesome! But this part just doesn't add up no matter how you look at it. So she would rather someone else's baby suffer because of Miles but not her own?!
"That's what it seems like people are trying to say..but that's just.....idk confusing! Switching the babies wouldn't change that a baby would be raised by the psychopath." [Sic]
