Elton John jokes about eye condition at Golden Globes 2025

Sir Elton John has joked about his eye condition at the 2025 Golden Globes – see what he had to say below.

In September, the legendary singer-songwriter revealed that he had been dealing with the infection over the summer that left him with “only limited vision in one eye”. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he continued.

In late November, John gave an update on his condition, revealing that it has been “four months now” since he’s been unable to see properly. “And my left eye is not the greatest,” he stated, adding that it has resulted in him feeling “stuck” while working on a new album.

Now, Elton appears to be in good spirits about his condition and has even joked about it while at the Golden Globes. Presenting the award for Best Original Score – Motion Picture with Brandi Carlile, Elton said onstage: “I don’t know if you know, but there’s been a lot of stories going around about my regressive eyesight.”

He continued: “I just wanted to reassure everybody that it’s not as bad as it seems. I’m so pleased to be here with my co-host, Rihanna“. The moment elicited a round of laughter as he and Brandi Carlile chuckled onstage.

In early December, Elton John shared an update on his condition while attending a Gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada: “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight.”

After joking about his eyesight at the Golden Globes, Elton and Brandi went on to announce the winner of Best Original Score – Motion Picture. As Brandi announced Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as the winners of the award for their Challengers soundtrack, Elton proudly cheered them on.

In other Elton John-related news, the legendary musician in late December had new waxwork of himself unveiled at Madame Tussauds in London, showing him doing his iconic handstand on a piano.

The figure is styled from his look at the 1975 Midsummer Music one-day festival at Wembley Stadium, and shows him wearing a recreation of the the bejewelled Bob Mackie jumpsuit worn during the performance. It also comes with his signature flamboyant glasses and platform shoes, while the piano he is seen with is covered in 24,000 rhinestones.

Elsewhere, the artist has been hinting at new music, saying in a new interview that “the juices have never dried up”.
